To compile its 2022 list of best online programs, U.S. News & World Report assessed 1,728 online degree programs and ranked 1,646—both all-time highs.⁴ Information for this year’s rankings was collected during the summer and fall of 2021 as part of the U.S. News annual statistical survey of online degree programs. The rankings measure overall academic quality, and only include predominantly online degree programs, from entry to completion; certificate programs and associate and doctoral degrees are excluded.⁴

According to U.S. News & World Report, “the Best Online Programs rankings measure whether online degree programs have academic standards commensurate with quality brick-and-mortar programs that are properly adapted toward the unique pedagogy of distance education.”⁴
